The British . . .
While I was in Sierra Leone the British staged their "show of force . . ." The British are extremely popular with Sierra Leoneans, many openly advocating "recolonization" . . .

A chinook carries a field gun and tractor from the fleet; the H.M.S. Ocean anchored off the coast of Freetown, and a heavily laden British soldier walks ashore . . .

The next three photos were taken from Circle Road, near the British Council
A church (anyone know which one?)

Some of the streets of Freetown. I think the first
shot is towards Kissy Road, the second shows how Freetown sort of climbs
the surrounding hills.
Norris the Ghanaian. He accompanied me through Victoria
Market and helped me select some gifts to take home.

Victoria Market, with its colorful canopies hung over
the pathways to shade customers, and shirt sellers (Mohamed S. Bah, "Dealer
in Cotton and Gara Materials of African Culture"). The shirts are
great, but the bargaining is even more fun . . .
Another departure from Sierra Leone
The colorful Paramount Airlines Mi-8 helicopter.
A beautiful Ghana Airways DC-10 at Lungi Airport!
Normally Freetown is served by one of Ghana Airway's venerable
DC-9 jets (small, rugged jets with two engines in the tail). The
rumor going around Freetown was that the day before (14 November?) one
of these DC-9s had to make a belly-landing in Conakry after its landing
gear failed to extend. Supposedly the plane was a total wreck, but
there were only minor injuries among the passengers. Unfortunately,
that plane was chopped into four pieces so that it could be removed from
the runway. Those of us scheduled to fly out of Lungi the next day
were worried that our flight would be cancelled - but Ghana Airways was
wonderful and brought in one of its big, comfortable DC-10s to get us!
I look forward to my next visit to beautiful Sierra Leone
